Mugham, also known as maqam, is a fundamental form of traditional Middle Eastern music, with distinct variations across different countries in the region. A defining characteristic of mugham is its profound connection to traditional Oriental poetry. Poetic imagery is woven into nearly every mugham composition performed by the singer (khanende). Common motifs include the Nightingale and the Rose, symbolising the male and female principles, and the blooming garden, representing an idealised earthly paradise. But what happens when these images step beyond the confines of poetry and take on a life of their own? After all, music is simply a collection of sounds organised by humans, initially created to imitate the natural sounds of the environment, including those made by animals, birds, and insects. If sound and rhythm exist throughout nature, then what, in essence, can truly be considered music?
This composition draws on the traditional canons of the Bayati-Shiraz mugham. It captures the sounds of living nature, transforming the symbolism of the poetic text into a vibrant, immersive performing experience.
